try this
If its not built onto the motherboard,re-seat it into ane pci slot and update driver and reboot. If not reinstall the driver for the ide interface and the sound card and find a more up to date driver for it.Check in the bios that there is an irq being assigned to the sound device and there is registration of the card.

thanks, but ..
it doesn't work. It's an sound card which is built into the motherboard of a Compaq Presario notebook computer, so I can't do much to physically remove it, or even fiddle with the jumpers like I could with a desktop mb. Hp pavilion g4 card reader driver for mac.
The bios tells me almost nothing, but as explained in my first post, windows xp recognizes the card and says that 'the device is working properly' in device manager, but on the properties card under 'audio devices' it says that the 'driver is enabled but has not been started'. It shows the sound card using IRQ 10, which is shared by a number of things, and it says that there are no conflicts. I think a key bit of evidence about the cause of the problem is that the USB sound card I tried to install as an alternative didn't work either, and resulted in exactly the same messages. Ess audiodrive es1868f drivers for mac. I think that means that the problem is related to the general windows drivers and services that allow for digital sound, and not to the specific drivers for either sound card. But the key question, which I still can't answer, is 'How do I 'start' the driver, if the installation process absolutely won't do it.' Jim

Thanks for your post - I've been trying to tackle the same problem after installing a USB sound device from M-Audio, which allows you to attach a guitar pickup to the PC (apparently by disabling the on-board soundcard). Don't have any answers, but you have given me a whole host of hings to try, thanks and I will keep you posted if/when I find a solution to this frustrating problem.

update
You're welcome. I hope one of the ideas works for you. It didn't for me, and I ended up having to reinstall windows xp. I guess I was lucky, though, as it did restore my sound - unlike some people who went to all that trouble without success.
For anyone who isn't a total cynic about Microsoft, it's quite amazing that a problem which dates back to windows 95 (I believe) still comes up, and there's still no fixes or even technical explanations for it on the MS web site. How hard would it be to provide a reliable means of telling windows to load and start a particular driver, along with an option to remove, reinstall, repair, or whatever if it doesn't start? Troubleshooting drivers still involves fighting with the plug and play system, and having too little manual control to deal with an unusual problem. Not much has changed since windows 95, and I doubt that vista would be any better. Good luck! Jim
